A resident of Kerala staying in his/her own house with family and is willing to set apart minimum one room (two beds) and maximum six rooms (twelve beds) for accommodating tourists can start a homestay with approval from the Department of Tourism, Kerala.
Based on the facilities and quality of the accommodation provided Homestay units are classified into three categories.
The Serviced Villa should be an independent, furnished home, preferably built in the traditional Kerala architectural style within the State, making available a minimum of one room and maximum of 6 rooms or 12 beds for guests. The owner need not stay in the building.
Approval is valid for three years.
Any building which is more than 50 years old and bears characteristics of the traditional Kerala architecture can be converted into an accommodation unit under the Grihasthali scheme.
Project subsidy and investment subsidy available.
The Tour Operator should have been in operation for a minimum period of two years before the date of application.
Farm Stay- Green Farms Kerala must offer a sprawling retreat with a minimum of 10 acres of farm or up to 50 acres of lush plantation, designed to provide visitors with a serene and immersive countryside experience. The property should be well-planned with a spacious parking area, a welcoming entry zone featuring a ticket counter, guard room, main gate, and clear nameboards for easy access. A compound wall at the entry area to ensures safety. To enhance the visitor experience, stalls or a shopping area can be thoughtfully placed either outside or within the farm premises, while a restaurant, coffee shop, or snack bar offers fresh and local delicacies. Inside the farm, well-laid walkways and informative signage guide guests through the greenery, making exploration both comfortable and enjoyable. Toilet facilities should be conveniently available both inside and outside the farm to cater to guests’ needs, ensuring a clean and visitor-friendly environment.
